  1. 11. Water supply management in an urban utility : A prototype decision support framework

    Author : Frank Kizito; Roger Thunvik; Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Decision support systems; Geographic information systems; Participatory planning; Urban water supply management; Decision support framework; Action research; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : In this study, four real-life problem situations were used to explore the challenges of developing and implementing decision support tools for planning and management within an urban water utility. The study sought to explore how the degree of adoption of formal decision support tools in practice, generally perceived to be low, could be improved. READ MORE

  2. 12. Sharing Water in Africa : Comparative Analysis of the Limpopo and Orange-Senqu River Basins in SADC and the Juba and Shabelle River Basins in the Horn of Africa

    Author : Abdullahi Elmi Mohamed; Jan-Erik Gustafsson; Ashok Swain; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Shared water; international river basins; river cooperation; water resources; conflicts; SADC and Horn of African regions; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : As water resources management becomes increasingly critical and many countries in the arid and semi-arid regions are increasingly forced to consider the possibilities of utilizing the water that is available in international rivers. Thus, the concerns relating to the use of international waters in shared rivers are becoming more important. READ MORE

  3. 13. Groundwater resources in hard rock coastal terrains : Insights into heterogeneity and spatial variability

    Author : Robert Earon; Bo Olofsson; Okke Batelaan; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crystalline Rock; Groundwater Balance; Kinematic porosity; Groundwater Recharge; Water Security; Coastal Aquifer; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Challenges regarding water security in hard rock coastal regions with limited soil cover are: a seasonal absence of recharge during times of peak residency, heterogeneity and variability of the fracture network, close proximity to saline water sources and spatially inconsistent storage and extraction. In areas where it is not feasible to connect residents to municipal water systems, a better understanding of the resilience of reservoirs is needed. READ MORE

  4. 14. Intensifying Agricultural Water Management in the Tropics : A cause of water shortage or a source of resilience?

    Author : Yihun Dile; Johan Rockström; Louise Karlberg; Mekonnen Gebremichael; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : Frequent climatic shocks have presented challenges for rainfed agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Appropriate water management practices are among the solutions to the challenges. The role of water harvesting in achieving sustainable agricultural intensification and specified resilience was explored. READ MORE

  5. 15. Urban water management : Modelling, simulation and control of the activated sludge process

    Author : Mats Ekman; Bengt Carlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Automatic Control; Reglerteknik;

    Abstract : During the last few decades, wastewater treatment processes in urban water management have become more and more efficient and complex. Several factors such as urbanization, stricter legislations on effluent quality, economics, increased knowledge of the involved biological, chemical and physical processes as well as technical achievements have been important incentives for the development of more efficient procedures for wastewater treatment plants.
