  2. 7. Water transport through perinatal skin : Barrier function and aquaporin water channels

    Author : Johan Ågren; Gunnar Sedin; Gunnar Flemström; Steven B Hoath; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Preterm infant; Transepidermal water loss; Aquaporin; Skin biology; Hyperosmolarity; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : While constituting a well functioning interface with the aqueous environment in utero, the skin offers a poor barrier after very preterm birth. As a result, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is high, a fact which has important clinical consequences in these infants. READ MORE

  3. 8. Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal-Marine System of the Baltic Sea under Hydro-Climatic Variability

    Author : Yuanying Chen; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Carmen Prieto; Marco Marani; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Baltic Sea; nutrient loads; hydro-climatic variability; hydrodynamics; solute transport; water quality.; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates a few important component processes for understanding and quantifying eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, that include characterization of nutrient loadings from land, water flow in the sea under changing climate conditions and transport of solutes originating from different locations along the coast. Furthermore, this study aims to improve our understanding on how processes from land (the nutrient loading conditions) and the sea (transport dynamics and water quality) couple to determine the fate of nutrients in the sea and the water quality in a selected localized coastal area, the Himmerfjärden Bay. 4. 9. Modeling flow and sediment transport in water bodies and watersheds

    Author : Muluneh Admass Mekonnen; Bijan Dargahi; Anders Wörman; Hans Bergh; Edward Buchak; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bed load transport model; ECOMSED; Hydrology; Hydrodynamics; Spectral Analysis; SWAT; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : The research focus is on the various modeling aspects of flow and sediment transport in water bodies and watersheds. The interaction of flow with a mobile bed involves a complex process in which various turbulent scales characterized by coherent structures cause a chaotic sediment motion. READ MORE

  5. 10. In the Pipe or End of Pipe? : Transport and Dispersion of Water-borne Pollutants and Feasibility of Abatement Measures

    Author : Christoffer Carstens; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Auli Niemi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contaminant transport modelling; Groundwater; Dispersion; Wave power; Eutrophication;

    Abstract : Eutrophication is one of the key environmental problems of today, both in terms of complexity and magnitude. For the Baltic Sea (BS), eutrophication is an acute problem, leading to hypoxic conditions at the bottom; a situation that is sustained and amplified, when phosphorus is released from hypoxic sediments.
