  1. 1. O⁺ heating in the high altitude cusp and mantle due to wave-particle interaction

    Author : Rikard Slapak; Stephan Buchert; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rymdteknik; Space Technology;

    Abstract : This thesis is composed of three articles, which have the common denominator that they are studies of heating of oxygen ions in the high altitude cusp and mantle in the terrestrial magnetosphere. All data analysis are based on observational data from the Cluster satellites. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nonlinear dynamics of frequency sweeping energetic particle modes in tokamaks

    Author : Frida Eriksson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; wave-particle interaction; Fusion plasma physics; bump-on-tail; toroidal Alfvén eigenmode; holes and clumps;

    Abstract : In a burning plasma, such as the next generation tokamak experiment ITER, significant numbers of highly energetic particles will be produced via nuclear reactions. The presence of energetic particles, be it fusion born alpha particles or ions accelerated by auxiliary heating schemes, may excite kinetic instabilities and thereby affect the heating and transport of all particles in the plasma. 3. 3. Fast ions and turbulent particle transport in tokamaks

    Author : Frida Eriksson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NBI; numerical modelling; turbulence; drift waves; bump-on-tail; density peaking; Fusion plasma physics; wave-particle interaction;

    Abstract : The presence of highly energetic (fast) ions, be it fusion born alpha particles or ions accelerated by auxiliary heating schemes, can affect the heating and transport of all particles in the plasma through two main mechanisms. First, fast ions may excite fast ion driven instabilities. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nonlinear interaction and propagation of gravitational and electromagnetic waves in plasmas

    Author : Martin Servin; Gert Brodin; Lennart Stenflo; Demetrios Papadopoulos; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; general relativity; plasma; gravitational waves; electromagnetic waves; nonlinear; wave interaction; wave propagation; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : Gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves are important as carriers of energy and information. This thesis is devoted to the study of the propagation and interaction of these waves in plasmas, with emphasis on nonlinear effects and applications within astrophysics. READ MORE

  5. 5. Non-linear dynamics of Alfvén eigenmodes excited by fast ions in tokamaks

    Author : Tommy Bergkvist; Torbjörn Hellsten; Fulvio Zonca; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fusion plasma; tokamak; MHD; toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes; thermonuclear alpha particles; ion cyclotron resonance heating; Electrophysics; Elektrofysik;

    Abstract : The tokamak is so far the most promising magnetic configuration for achieving a net production of fusion energy. The D-T fusion reactions result in 3.5 MeV alpha-particles, which may destabilize Alfvén eigenmodes through wave-particle interaction. READ MORE
