  1. 1. Fiber optic parametric amplifiers in single and multi wavelength applications

    Author : Thomas Torounidis; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber optical parametric amplifiers; optical time division multiplexing; highly nonlinear fiber; pulse generation; wavelength division multiplexing; optical time domain reflectometry.; four-wave mixing; cross-gain saturation; optical gain and bandwidth; transmission;

    Abstract : This thesis describes fiber optical parametricamplifiers (FOPAs) used in single- and multi-wavelength channel applications.The FOPA was operated as a pulse source in optical transmission systems at bit rates of 10-160 Gb/s. It was evaluated in terms of bit error rate after transmission with link lengths up to 650 km. READ MORE

  2. 2. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems

    Author : Jie Li; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 3. 3. Fiber-Optic Systems with Coherent Detection and Four-Dimensional Modulation

    Author : Martin E Sjödin; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; intradyne; polarization-switched QPSK; quadrature phase-shift keying QPSK ; coherent detection; self-homodyne; wavelength-division multiplexing; 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation; self-phase modulation; 128-SP-QAM; polarization multiplexing; pilot tone;

    Abstract : To increase the data rates of fiber-optic communication systems, modulation formats withhigher spectral efficiency and/or higher power efficiency than binary formats are of greatinterest. These formats require coherent detection and this thesis has been dedicated toinvestigating both novel modulation formats and two different types of coherent systems. READ MORE
