  1. 16. Carbon sequestration processes in tropical seagrass beds

    Author : Liberatus Dominick Lyimo; Mats Björk; Martin Gullström; Mariam Hamis; Teresa Alcoverro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seagrass; Carbon sequestration; Carbon sink; Eutrophication; Productivity; Nitrous oxide; Methane; Greenhouse gases; Tropical; Eastern Africa; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Seagrass meadows may play a substantial role in climate change mitigation as they are capable to sequester and store substantial amounts of anthropogenic carbon in plant biomass and, more importantly, in their underlying sediments. In this PhD thesis, the carbon-burial potential was assessed by quantifying the amount of organic carbon stored in different seagrass meadows, each dominated by one of the four major seagrass species in the Western Indian Ocean region. 2. 17. Ecological connectivity in East African seascapes

    Author : Charlotte Berkström; Nils Kautsky; Susan S. Bell; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fish; functional group; food-web interactions; nursery; coral; seagrass; mangrove; landscape ecology; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves constitute a complex mosaic of habitats referred to as the tropical seascape. Great gaps exist in the knowledge of how these systems are interconnected. This thesis sets out to examine ecological connectivity, i.e. READ MORE

  3. 18. Mahilaka : An archaeological investigation of an early town in northwestern Madagascar

    Author : Chantal Radimilahy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Archaeology; Madagascar; urbanism; environment; resource availability; spatial analysis; Arkeologi; Archaeology subjects; Arkeologiämnen; arkeologi; Archaeology;

    Abstract : In 1988, at the beginning of the 'Urban Origins in Eastern Africa' research project, it was thought that no towns existed in Madagascar prior to the 17th century. This thesis shows that Madagascar did in fact support an urban population with a wide range of local and regional contacts from the end of the first millennium AD. READ MORE

  4. 19. Fishing for sustainability : Towards transformation of seagrass-associated small-scale fisheries

    Author : Sieglind Wallner-Hahn; Maricela de la Torre-Castro; Christina Hicks; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; small-scale fisheries; co-management; social-ecological systems; ecosystem services; institutions; transformation; seagrass meadows; destructive gear; food-web interactions; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Small-scale fisheries employ many millions of people around the world, and are particularly important in developing countries, where the dependency on marine resources is high and livelihood diversification options are scarce. In many areas of the world however, small-scale fisheries are at risk which threatens the food security and wellbeing of coastal people. READ MORE

  5. 20. Identification and implications of fish nurseries in tropical and subtropical seascapes

    Author : Linda Eggertsen; Charlotte Berkström; Nils Kautsky; Johan Eklöf; Simon Pittman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marinbiologi; Marine Biology;

    Abstract : Many species of reef fish reside in specific nursery habitats as juveniles. Seagrass meadows, and mangroves are examples of well-recognized nursery habitats, but only recently canopy-forming seaweeds have been found to provide important habitats for some fish species in the tropics.
