  1. 1. Wetland Mitigation Banking in the United States

    Author : Ville Pekka Tapani Inkinen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; land use; offsetting; mitigation banking; wetlands;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I study market-based biodiversity conservation policies in the context of the wetland compensatory mitigation program under the US Clean Water Act. The program requires developers to compensate for adverse impacts on wetlands by purchasing credits that specialized firms have generated in advance from wetland conservation activities. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nitrogen Removal in Created Wetlands : Considerations – Challenges – Possibilities

    Author : Josefin E. Nilsson; Antonia Liess; Stefan Weisner; Eva Lindström; Jennifer Tank; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecosystem services; eutrophication; constructed wetlands; agricultural runoff; denitrification; wetland multifunctionality; climate change; nutrient retention; vegetation; hydrology; greenhouse gas emissions; biodiversity; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Abstract : Created wetlands in agricultural landscapes deliver a multitude of ecosystem services, one of which is the removal of nitrogen (N) from water to reduce eutrophication. Wetland N removal, primarily through denitrification, is influenced by various factors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Invading Herbivory. Effects of the Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) in Asian Wetlands

    Author : Nils Carlsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gastropoda; invasive species; golden apple snail; herbivory; wetland functioning; biodiversity; sustainable control; indigenous predators; size-dependent competitive ability; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; Hydrobiology; aquatic ecology; marine biology;

    Abstract : The South American golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) was intentionally introduced to aquacultures in South East Asia to produce snails for human consumption, but the aquatic snails soon escaped and started to consume large amounts of rice seedlings. The aim of this thesis was to quantify the effects of this invasive herbivore on aquatic plants in natural wetlands since previous research has focused on effects of the snail in rice fields. 4. 4. The importance of wetlands for biodiversity in agricultural and urban landscapes

    Author : Elisabeth Lundkvist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Dytiscidae; diving beetles; wetland; pond; diversity; assemblage; CCA; ordination; variation partitioning; community structure; flight; migration;

    Abstract : The aim in this thesis was to study the importance of different types of wetlands for the biodiversity in a landscape. The landscapes were both agricultural and urban, and wetlands were in different successional stages. Diving beetles (Dytiscidae) were used as study organisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mosquitoes as a Part of Wetland Biodiversity

    Author : Martina Schäfer; Jacob Höglund; Jan Lundström; Darold Batzer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; diversity patterns; species assemblages; functional groups; constructed wetlands; dytiscids; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Wetlands contain both aquatic and terrestrial environments which generates high biodiversity. However, they are commonly associated with mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), and mosquitoes are usually regarded as negative by humans because they can cause nuisance and transmit diseases. READ MORE
