  1. 1. Geochemical Landscape Analysis for the Risk Assessment of Acid Mine Drainage in a Wetland Environment

    Author : Andrea Szucs; Ulf Qvarfort; Richard Wanty; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Earth sciences; acid mine drainage; environmental geochemistry; landscape; risk assessment; stream; wetland; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Attenuation of acid mine drainage (AMD) metals originating from abandoned mines and waste rock dumps is investigated in this thesis at Slättberg in central Sweden, where acid mine leachate has been discharging for over 70 years into the receiving wetland stream and mire. Risk assessment of AMD and related polluted lands requires a holistic approach that is able to study the complexity of pollution emissions and impacted landscapes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Towards co-management of Gialova Lagoon : A Natura 2000 coastal wetland in Messinia, Greece

    Author : Georgios Maneas; Håkan Berg; Stefano Manzoni; Ernsteins Raimonds; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Salinity; wetland restoration; ecosystem services; participatory modelling; social-ecological system; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : The management of Natura 2000 sites is considered as the cornerstone for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity within Europe. However, protected ecosystems provide a plethora of benefits to local societies, and support the local economy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Phytostabilisation : use of wetland plants to treat mine tailings

    Author : Eva Stoltz; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Marinus Otte; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phytostabilisation; wetland plants; mine tailings; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Mine tailings can be rich in sulphide minerals and may form acid mine drainage (AMD) through reaction with atmospheric oxygen and water. AMD contains elevated levels of metals and arsenic (As) that could be harmful to animals and plants. READ MORE

  4. 4. The importance of wetlands for biodiversity in agricultural and urban landscapes

    Author : Elisabeth Lundkvist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Dytiscidae; diving beetles; wetland; pond; diversity; assemblage; CCA; ordination; variation partitioning; community structure; flight; migration;

    Abstract : The aim in this thesis was to study the importance of different types of wetlands for the biodiversity in a landscape. The landscapes were both agricultural and urban, and wetlands were in different successional stages. Diving beetles (Dytiscidae) were used as study organisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nitrogen transformations in wetlands: Effects of water flow patterns

    Author : Torbjörn Davidsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrobiology; hydrology; infiltration; subsurface flow; surface flow; wetland; nitrogen; Denitrification; mineralization; nitrification; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have studied nitrogen turnover processes in watermeadows. A watermeadow is a wetland where water infiltrates through the soil of a grassland field. READ MORE
