  1. 21. Gene expression patterns in human adipose tissue in relation to fat mass and adipose depot

    Author : Kristina Linder Ekberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Obesity, especially excess amount of abdominal fat, predisposes to a high risk for cardiovascular disease. Cancer cachexia is characterized by a specific loss of white adipose tissue (WAT) and skeletal muscle mass, and is associated with decreased survival and poor response to chemotherapy. READ MORE

  2. 22. Immune cell-derived adipokines : role in white adipose tissue function and link to metabolic health

    Author : Kaisa Hofwimmer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The white adipose tissue (WAT) is home to a vast array of immune cells that control local homeostasis and metabolism by engaging in intricate crosstalk with adipocytes and their precursors through secreted factors (adipokines). In the obese WAT, these immune cells adopt a pro-inflammatory profile, resulting in a state of chronic low-grade inflammation that can perturb local and systemic metabolic function. READ MORE

  3. 23. Pathophysiological regulation of white adipocyte exocytosis of different adiponectin molecular forms

    Author : Musovic Saliha; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; White adipocytes; adiponectin exocytosis secretion; health and metabolic disease;

    Abstract : In this thesis we have identified mechanisms involved in the exocytosis of different adiponectin molecular forms in health and in metabolic disease. We have also studied similarities and differences in depot-specific adipocyte adiponectin release. READ MORE

  4. 24. Tartrate resistant acid phosphatase 5a : a potential regulator of adipocyte cell number and differentiation in white adipose tissue

    Author : Christina Patlaka; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) exists in two isoforms, TRAP 5a which is monomeric and TRAP 5b which is a dimer generated by proteolytic cleavage of TRAP 5a, that exhibit different functions and localizations. TRAP 5a is expressed by adipose tissue macrophages and secreted into the extracellular environment and has been shown to lead to hyperplastic insulin-sensitive obesity when over-expressed in mice. 5. 25. Characterisation of human adipose tissue : ceramide metabolism, depot differences and evaluation of dysfunctionality

    Author : Joanna Gertow; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Normal adipose tissue function is necessary for maintaining proper energy balance, as both excess and absence of this tissue lead to metabolic disturbances, such as insulin resistance. Adipose tissue can be dysfunctional in many ways, including disturbances in adipocyte size, lipolysis rate, adipokine secretion, inflammation, fibrosis or oxidative stress. READ MORE
