  1. 1. Ecological and evolutionary aspects on the host plant biology of Papilio machaon L

    Author : Christer Wiklund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

  2. 2. Plant polyploidy and interactions with insect herbivores

    Author : Leena Arvanitis; Johan Ehrlén; Christer Wiklund; John N. Thompson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diversicifation; herbivory; host plant preference; plant galls; plant-insect interactions; plant polyploidy; selection; spatial variation; trait-fitness relationship; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Polyploidization has been suggested to be a common mechanism for plant speciation. Polyploidy is associated with changes in plant traits and altered habitat preference. READ MORE

  3. 3. The evolution of territoriality in butterflies

    Author : Martin Bergman; Christer Wiklund; Ronald Rutowski; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : territoriality; Lepidoptera; sexual selection; mating success; mate locating behaviour; resource-holding potential; motivation; courtship solicitation; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Competition over mating opportunities is a conspicuous characteristic of animal behaviour. In many butterfly species the males establish territories in places advantageous for encountering females. This thesis addresses questions about how territoriality has evolved and is maintained in butterflies. READ MORE

  4. 4. The evolution of mating rates in Pieris napi

    Author : Jonas Bergström; Christer Wiklund; Göran Arnqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : In the green-veined white butterfly (Pieris napi), females obtain direct fitness benefits from mating multiply and studies have shown that fitness increases seemingly monotonically with number of matings. The reason is that at mating males transfer a large nutritious gift (a so called nuptial gift) to the females that the females use to increase both their fecundity and lifespan. READ MORE

  5. 5. The evolutionary ecology of niche separation : Studies on the sympatric butterflies Leptidea sinapis and Leptidea reali

    Author : Magne Friberg; Wiklund Christer; John N. Thompson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lepidoptera; ecological character displacement; reproductive isolation; species discrimination; habitat; host plant; life history; sexual selection; female choice; Biology; Biologi; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Studies of ecology and evolution have become largely integrated, and increasing attention is paid to the role of ecology for speciation and post speciation divergence. In this thesis I have applied an in-depth approach studying the ecology of a butterfly species pair; the morphologically virtually identical sister-species, the Wood white (Leptidea sinapis) and Reál’s wood white (Leptidea reali).
