  1. 21. Sub-lethal Effects of Anthropogenic Contaminants on Aquatic Invertebrates

    Author : Warren Kunce; Frank Johansson; Jan Örberg; Sarah Josefsson; Jes Rasmussen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : ecotoxicology; sub-lethal; behavior; biomarkers; thermal tolerance; pesticides; pyrethroids; neonicotinoids; pharmaceuticals; antihistamines; microplastics; mixtures; freshwater; invertebrates; chironomids; damselflies; snails; Biology with specialization in Animal Conservation; Biologi med inriktning mot zoologisk bevarandebiologi;

    Abstract : Anthropogenic contaminants are considered to play a substantial role in the decline of freshwater invertebrate diversity. Sub-lethal effects of many of these contaminants on behaviour and life-history traits of aquatic invertebrates may contribute to their decline. READ MORE

  2. 22. How elephants utilize a miombo-wetland ecosystem in Ugalla landscape, Western Tanzania

    Author : Elikana Kalumanga; Sara Cousins; Steve Lyon; Jan Bengtsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Browsing; Elephants; Forage; GPS collars; Mineral elements; Miombo woodlands; Protected areas; Termite mounds; Ugalla; Water hyacinth; Woody plants abundance; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : African elephants are ‘keystone’ species with respect to biodiversity conservation in Africa since they maintain habitats that support several animal communities by changing vegetation structure through foraging and by dispersing seeds between landscapes. Elephants are also ‘flagship’ species because, given their impressive size, they can make people sympathetic and stimulate local and international concerns for their protection. READ MORE

  3. 23. Linking movement ecology with the management of mobile species : managing moose in Sweden

    Author : Andrew Allen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : A central goal in conserving, or managing, biodiversity is to identify the spatial scale of management. Traditional approaches like protected areas aim to delineate boundaries, within which species are managed. These boundaries are set using, among others, species richness targets and political borders, but often fail to consider species movements. READ MORE

  4. 24. Decadal effects of forest fire on biodiversity and browsing : a comparison between wildfire and prescribed burning

    Author : Emelie Fredriksson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The role of fire as a natural disturbance in northern European boreal ecosystems has largely disappeared due to effective fire suppression with large consequences for fire-associated biodiversity. Recently, prescribed burns have been introduced as a conservation action that aims to promote biodiversity. READ MORE

  5. 25. Sustainable policy for energy, land and natural resources

    Author : James MacGregor; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; environmental economics; natural resources; energy; climate; microcredit; sustainability; cost-benefit analysis; poverty; agriculture;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of four papers which are related to critical natural resource issues from a developing and emerging country perspective. All four papers demonstrate the importance of financial incentives in driving behaviour and investments. READ MORE
