  1. 6. Accurate physical and numerical modeling of complex vortex phenomena over delta wings

    Author : Simone Crippa; Arthur Rizzi; Stefan Wallin; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; computational fluid dynamics; CFD; vortical flow; delta wing; aerodynamics; flow physics; steady; unsteady; Vehicle engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : With this contribution to the AVT-113/VFE-2 task group it was possible to prove the feasibility of high Reynolds number CFD computations to resolve and thus better understand the peculiar dual vortex system encountered on the VFE-2 blunt leading edge delta wing. Initial investigations into this phenomenon seemed to undermine the hypothesis, that the formation of the inner vortex system relies on the laminar state of the boundary layer at separation onset. 4. 9. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy

    Author : Ekaterina Shevtsova; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chalcidoidea; parasitic wasps; structural colors; visual signaling; cryptic species; sexual dimorphism; wing membrane thickness; wing micro-morphology; wing cuticle ultrastructure;

    Abstract : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 5. 10. In the wake of a bird - Quantifying aerodynamic performance of avian flight

    Author : Marco Klein Heerenbrink; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; animal flight; flight performance; gliding; powered flight; wing morphology; aerodynamics; biomechanics; birds; jackdaw; Corvus monedula; wind tunnel; PIV;

    Abstract : Flight is an expensive form of locomotion, but also offers the ability to travel great distances at relatively low cost. Birds have developed various adaptations for optimizing flight performance. The main aim of this thesis is to identify how morphological variables in birds affect aerodynamic drag and flight performance. READ MORE
