  1. 11. Improved Fluidized Bed Drying Technology for Wood Fuels

    Author : Jonas Berghel; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I discuss experiences from designing, building and evaluating two research plants, which use circulating, atmospheric pressure superheated steam as drying medium for drying sawdust in a fluidized bed. The increased use of pellets has created a demand for new drying equipment at the Swedish pellet plants. READ MORE

  2. 12. Fighting flameless fires : Initiating and extinguishing self-sustainedsmoldering fires in wood pellets

    Author : Ragni Fjellgaard Mikalsen; Vidar Frette; Bjarne C. Hagen; Ulrich Krause; Anne Steen-Hansen; Ulrich Krause; Nieves Fernandez-Anez; RISE; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fuel storage safety; Industrial fire; Biofuels; Smoldering; Extinguishment; Fire suppression; Fire growth; Fire spread; Heat transfer; Nonlinear dynamics; Complex systems; Combustion; Biomass energy; Synchronization; Oscillations; EMRIS;

    Abstract : Smoldering fires represent domestic, environmental and industrial hazards. This flameless form of combustion is more easily initiated than flaming, and is also more persistent and difficult to extinguish. The growing demand for non-fossil fuels has increased the use of solid biofuels such as biomass. READ MORE

  3. 13. Wood fuel markets in Northern Europe : price formation and internationalization

    Author : Olle Olsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : High fossil fuel prices and ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have increased demand for renewable energy and are changing wood fuel market structures. Wood fuels are to a rapidly growing degree used in industrial proportions and traded in commercial markets. READ MORE

  4. 14. Towards Understanding the Pelletizing Process of Biomass : Perspectives on Energy Efficiency and Pelletability of Pure Substances

    Author : Stefan Frodeson; Jonas Berghel; Sylvia Larsson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Pelletability; wood pellets; densification; chemical composition; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : The use of fossil resources has to decrease and the use of renewable resources has to increase significantly to mitigate the climate change. In this change towards more renewable resources, biomasses will play an important role, both for energy use and for products. READ MORE

  5. 15. Mitigating Off-Gassing and Self-Heating in Fuel Wood Pellets Storage : A Raw Materials Selection and Pre-Treatment Centred Approach

    Author : Workson Siwale; Jonas Berghel; Gunnar Henriksson; Michael Finell; Stefan Frodeson; Mani Sudhagar; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; solid biofuels; densified biomass; heat generation; off-gas emissions; carbon monoxide; carbon dioxide; methane; fatty and resin acids; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : Wood pellets have become a preferred solid biomass fuel for heat and power generation due to their standardized nature, known properties, and consistent quality. However, pellets produced from fresh sawdust sometimes undergo self-heating and off-gassing during storage. This poses a challenge for their transportation and storage. READ MORE
