1. Structural studies of ba3-type cytochrome c oxidase using serial crystallography and X-ray absorption spectroscopy
Abstract : Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) catalyses the reduction of molecular oxygen to water while the energy released in this process is used transport protons “up-hill” across an energy transducing biological membrane, creating a proton-motive force for ATP synthesis. Given its key role in energy transduction in organisms, proton pumping has been extensively studied across species. READ MORE

2. Infrared - X-ray pump probe spectroscopy
Abstract : The present thesis concerns theoretical studies of molecular interactions investigated by infrared and X-ray spectroscopic techniques, with emphasis on using the two technologies combined in pump probe experiments. Three main types of studies are addressed: the use of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectra (NEXAFS) to manifest through-bond and through-space interactions; the role of hydrogen bonding on the formation of X-ray photoelectron spectra as evidenced by simulations of the water dimer; and the development of theory, with sample applications, for infrared X-ray pump probe spectroscopy - the main theme of the thesis. 3. Synchrotron Radiation Studies of Molecular Building Blocks for Functional Materials
Abstract : The research on new materials is a primary driving force for progress in human society. One of the most significant research topic nowadays is the development of new functional materials for technological applications, like perovskite implemented in solar cells, and graphene as a representative for the new 2D materials family. 4. Photoelectron Spectroscopy on Atoms, Molecules and Clusters : The Geometric and Electronic Structure Studied by Synchrotron Radiation and Lasers
Abstract : Atoms, molecules and clusters all constitute building blocks of macroscopic matter. Therefore, understanding the electronic and geometrical properties of such systems is the key to understanding the properties of solid state objects. READ MORE

5. Techniques and Application of Electron Spectroscopy Based on Novel X-ray Sources
Abstract : The curiosity of researchers to find novel characteristics and properties of matter constantly pushes for the development of instrumentation based on X-radiation. I present in this thesis techniques for electron spectroscopy based on developments of X-ray sources both in time structure and energy. READ MORE
