1. Discovery of N-hydroxyguanidines as novel electron acceptors of xanthine oxidase : Potential new drugs for treatment of ischemia and reperfusion injury
Abstract : Xanthine oxidase (EC 1.1.3.22) is one of the major enzymatic sources of oxygen-derived free radicals. READ MORE

2. NADPH oxidase and xanthine oxidoreductase as targets and regulators of the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway
Abstract : Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by NADPH oxidase (NOX) and xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) with a concomitant decrease in the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) from eNOS contributes to the development of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Extensive research has proven the existence of an alternative NOS-independent pathway for NO production. READ MORE

3. Pharmacogenetics of drug metabolizing enzymes with special emphasis on Ethiopians
Abstract : Pharmacogenetics of drug metabolising enzymes has been well studied in Caucasians and Asians, but relatively little in Africans. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the molecular genetics of drug metabolising enzymes, in particular CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP1B1, CYP1A2 and XO, with special emphasis on the Ethiopian population. 4. Redox processes and oxidative stress in cell and tissue damage
Abstract : Oxidative stress is described as an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants, with a shift towards the oxidants. When the antioxidative systems are insufficient or the production of radicals is increased oxidative damage can occur, damaging DNA, lipids, and proteins. Oxidative stress has been implicated in several pathologies. READ MORE

5. Effect of Ischaemia-Reperfusion on Rabbit Kidney and Human Brain
Abstract : Free radicals are produced in various organs at ischaemia-reperfusion. The final stage in radical damage is lipid peroxidation. We have demonstrated previously that a lipid-soluble antioxidant improves restoration of bioenergetics in rabbit kidneys after ischaemia, as reflected in 31P spectrometry. READ MORE
