16. Artificial blood vessels - Studies on endothelial cell and blood interactions with bacterial cellulose
Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases are still the number one cause of death or invalidity in the western world today. Atherosclerotic plaques and restenosis can result in severe occlusions of peripheral and coronary arteries. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease and includes drug therapy and bypass surgery. READ MORE

17. Exploring Biopolymer-Clay Nanocomposite Materials by Molecular Modelling
Abstract : In this thesis, bio-nanocomposites made from two alternative biopolymers and montmorillonite (Mnt) clay have been investigated by molecular modelling. These biopolymers are xyloglucan (XG) and chitosan (CHS), both of which are abundant, renewable, and cost-effective. READ MORE

18. Heterologous expression and characterization of xyloglucan endotransglycosylases from Populus tremula x tremuloides
Abstract : Xyloglucan endotransglycosylases (XETs) are enzymes involvedin the reorganization of the primary cell wall. This thesisdescribes several aspects of XET16A from hybrid aspen (Populustremula x tremuloides). The gene was isolated from the hybridaspen cDNA library and the protein was expressed heterologouslyin the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. READ MORE

19. Structural Studies of a Xyloglucan Endotransglycosylase from Populus tremula x tremuloides and Three Conserved Hypothetical Proteins from Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Abstract : This thesis describes the structural studies of four different proteins from two organisms. Xyloglucan endotransglycosylases, XETs, are involved in plant cell wall expansion and remodeling by splitting and reconnecting xyloglucan-cellulose crosslinks. The first crystal structure of a XET enzyme has been determined to 1.8 Å. READ MORE

20. Production and engineering of a xyloglucan endo-transglycosylase from Populus tremula x tremuloides
Abstract : The aim of this work was to develop a production process for the enzyme xyloglucan endo-transglycosylase from Populus tremula x tremuloides (PttXET16-34). The natural transglycosylating activity of this enzyme has previously been employed in a XET-Technology. READ MORE
