  1. 1. In Vitro Studies of Adrenocorticolytic DDT Metabolites, with Special Focus on 3-methylsulfonyl-DDE

    Author : Vendela Asp; Ingvar Brandt; Ulrika Bergström; Olle Söder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicity; 3-methylsulfonyl-DDE; CYP; adrenal cortex; metabolic activation; steroid hormones; Y-1; H295R; mitotane; adrenocortical carcinoma; Toxicology; Toxikologi; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Abstract : The DDT metabolite 3-methylsulfonyl-DDE (3-MeSO2-DDE) is bioactivated by cytochrome P450 11B1 (CYP11B1) in the adrenal cortex of mice and forms irreversibly bound protein adducts, reduces glucocorticoid secretion, and induces cell death selectively in cortisol-producing adrenocortical cells. 3-MeSO2-DDE has therefore been proposed as a lead compound for an improved adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) therapy. 2. 2. Adrenocorticolysis Induced by 3-MeSO2-DDE : Mechanisms of Action, Kinetics and Species Differences

    Author : Veronica Lindström; Ingvar Brandt; Ulrika Bergström; Eva Brittebo; Hans Tjälve; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Toxicology; 3-methylsulphonyl-DDE; o; p -DDD; CYP11B1; adrenal cortex; tissue-specific toxicity; bioactivation; kinetics; Y-1 cells; Toxikologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The DDT metabolite 3-methylsulphonyl-DDE (3-MeSO2-DDE) induces cell death specifically in the adrenal cortex of mice after a cytochrome P45011B1 (CYP11B1)-catalysed bioactivation. This substance is not only an environmental pollutant, but also a suggested lead compound for an improved chemotherapy of adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC). READ MORE

  3. 3. Land-atmosphere interaction of a subarctic palsa mire

    Author : Marcin Jackowicz-Korczynski; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; eddy covariance; chamber; methnaol; isoprene; nonmethane hydrocarbons; methane; carbon dioxide; carbon; mire; permafrost; subarctic; palsa; greenhouse gas;

    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to quantitatively estimate the gaseous exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) between a subarctic wetland ecosystem and the atmosphere. Additionally some initial estimates of the carbon input to the atmosphere of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were also obtained by combining different techniques in a joint setting. READ MORE

  4. 4. Radiation exposure of human populations in villages in Russia and Belarus affected by fallout from the Chernobyl reactor

    Author : Christian Bernhardsson; Malmö Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chernobyl; caesium; effective dose; OSL; NaCl; TL; LiF; radiation protection survey instruments; deposition variability; long-term series;

    Abstract : A quarter of a century has elapsed since the catastrophe at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl. The radioactive fallout affected all the European countries and most severely the three countries of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. READ MORE

  5. 5. Use of pre-treatments and substrate blending to enhance process efficiency in black soldier fly larvae composting of food industry waste

    Author : Alice Isibika; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) composting is a biowaste treatment that converts biomass into valuable animal protein and fertiliser, but low protein content and complex molecules (e.g. fibre) in substrate reduce BSFL composting efficiency. This thesis evaluated the impact of using pre-treatments and blending substrates on BSFL process efficiency. READ MORE
