    Abstract : Objectives: To study the effects of prenatal zinc and vitamin A supplementation on birthsize, neonatal morbidity, infant mortality, and growth in children up to two years of age. Subjects and Methods: From September 1995 to December 1999 pregnant women inPurworejo District, Central Java, Indonesia with gestational age ... READ MORE

  2. 2. Quantum Chemical Modeling of Binuclear Zinc Enzymes

    Author : Shilu Chen; Fahmi Himo; Luca De Gioia; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum Chemical Modeling; Binuclear; Zinc; Enzyme; DFT; Mechanism; Theoretical chemistry; Teoretisk kemi;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, the reaction mechanisms of several di-zinc hydrolases have been explored using quantum chemical modeling of the enzyme active sites. The studied enzymes are phosphotriesterase (PTE), aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP), glyoxalase II (GlxII), and alkaline phosphatase (AP). READ MORE

  3. 3. Zinc in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in some neurological diseases

    Author : Ragnar Palm; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zinc; copper; serum; cerebrospinal fluid; albumin; multiple sclerosis; epilepsy; phenytoin; blood brain barrier damage; subarachnoid haemorrhage.;

    Abstract : The trace elements zinc and copper are essential components of many enzymes, some of which are of importance for the development and function of the central nervous system. Deficiency of the metals has been shown to lead to malformations and to the loss of myelin in animals. READ MORE

  4. 4. Micro-galvanic effects and corrosion inhibition of copper-zinc alloys

    Author : Mattias Forslund; Jinshan Pan; Christofer Leygraf; Per Claesson; Jin Ying; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Copper; zinc; brass; octadecanethiol; IR Spectroscopy; AFM; atmospheric corrosion; aqueous corrosion; corrosion inhibition; Koppar; zink; mässing; oktadekantiol; IR-reflektions absorptionsspektroskopi; AFM; atmosfärisk korrosion; vattenaktig korrosion; korrosionsinhibering.; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract :    With the advancement and accessibility of local probing techniques that can operate at the submicron scale it has become possible to analyse the local corrosion properties of industrially important metallic materials and relate these properties to microstructure characteristics of the same materials. In this doctoral study the focus has been on copper-zinc samples, both as industrial brass alloys and as micro-patterned copper-zinc samples. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biochemical Studies of Semenogelins with Emphasis on Zinc-Binding Properties

    Author : Magnus Jonsson; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sexualitet; sexuality; Obstetrik; gynekologi; andrologi; reproduction; andrology; gynaecology; Obstetrics; Klinisk kemi; Clinical chemistry; gel-forming proteins; surface plasmon resonance; prostate-specific antigen; protein C inhibitor; seminal plasma; zinc; semen; semenogelin; reproduktion;

    Abstract : Semenogelins I and II (SgI and SgII) are homologous and rapidly evolving proteins that have a repetitive primary structure and are synthesized mainly in the seminal vesicles. Upon ejaculation, a gelatinous coagulum is formed when the semenogelin-rich secretion from the seminal vesicles is mixed with the prostate secretion, which contains high concentrations of zinc(II) and proteases.
