  1. 1. Mutual Mate Choice in the Deep Snouted Pipefish Syngnathus typhle

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Zooekologi

    Author : Maria Widemo; John D. Reynolds; [2003]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Sexual selection; mutual mate choice; mate competition; sex role reversal; parental investment; Biologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis integrates the fields of sexual selection, parental investment and sex role theory by investigating mutual mate choice and mate competition in the sex role reversed deep snouted pipefish Syngnathus typhle (Pisces: Syngnathidae) through a series of laboratory experiments. 2. 2. Plumage Colours and the Eye of the Beholder The Ecology of Colour and its Perception in Birds

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Olle Håstad; Uppsala universitet.; [2003]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; ultraviolet; colour vision; opsin; Ekologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Virtually all diurnal birds have tetrachomatic vision based on four different colour receptors. As a result, birds are potentially able to perceive their environment in twice as many colours as humans and four times as many colours compared to most other mammals, which are dichromatic. 3. 3. Influence of Mate Quality on Reproductive Decisions in a Fish with Paternal Care

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Niclas Kolm; Uppsala universitet.; [2003]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; sexual selection; differential allocation; evolution of egg size and parental care; Ekologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Female reproductive decisions have been suggested to be highly influenced by mate quality. I have studied whether offspring quality may be adjusted by females to match the attractiveness of males and how strong control females have over their reproductive investment focusing on egg size. 4. 4. Conservation Genetics of the Eurasian Otter in Sweden

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Johanna Arrendal; Uppsala universitet.; [2007]
    Keywords : Ecology; in situ conservation; individual identification; microsatellites; mtDNA; noninvasive genetic sampling; population dynamics; population size; PVA; restocking; Ekologi; Lutra lutra;

    Abstract : In this thesis, molecular genetic methods were used to study a threatened species, the Eurasian otter. Estimates of population size and population dynamics parameters were obtained, the genetic effects of a restocking program was evaluated, and a population viability analysis was conducted to assess which demographic parameters are most important for the future viability of an otter population. 5. 5. Life History of the Common Gull (Larus canus) A Long-Term Individual-Based Study

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Kalev Rattiste; Uppsala universitet.; [2006]
    Keywords : Ecology; longitudinal studies; reproductive success; survival; pair bond; indicator trait; breeding time; heritability; selection; Ekologi; Larus canus; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : An individual’s life history is a sequence of events which eventually determine its contribution to the next generation, or fitness. These events are affected by environmental factors, genetic make-up and decisions made by an individual and its breeding partner. READ MORE
