  1. 6. Patterns of fish larvae and zooplankton distribution in mangrove-seagrass seascapes of East Africa

    Author : Barnabas Alphonce Tarimo; Martin Gullström; Monika Winder; Mats Björk; Gunilla Rosenqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fish larvae; zooplankton; population dynamics; community structure; environmental variables; seasonal variation; habitat use; mangroves; seagrass meadows; seascape connectivity; Tanzania; western Indian Ocean; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Mangroves and seagrass meadows create coastal seascapes acting as breeding and nursery grounds for many fish species in tropical areas. Despite increased awareness on the role of these coastal habitats to fish, less knowledge is given to fish larvae distribution and population dynamics, limiting the understanding of major drivers of fish population dynamics and fisheries resources management, particularly in understudied regions such as the Western Indian Ocean. 3. 8. Spring dynamics in shallow lakes: the role of plankton, fish and macrophytes in a changing climate

    Author : Alice Nicolle; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zooplankton; spring; 0 fish; macrophytes; phenology; climate change; shallow lakes;

    Abstract : Shallow lakes such as Lake Krankesjön are characterized by their extended littoral zones, usually covered by submersed and emergent vegetation. In paper 1, I investigated the relationship between turbidity and macrophyte growth (Chara spp. READ MORE

  4. 9. The importance of terrestrial carbon in plankton food webs

    Author : Cesar Bolivar Daniel; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; lakes; carbon; zooplankton; Spumella elongata; Poterioochromonas malhamensis; flagellates; bacteria; stable isotopes; photochemistry; autochthonous; DOC; allochthonous; plankton; Ekologi; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : Allochthonous substances, i.e. produced in terrestrial ecosystems, are known to fuel bacterial production in humic lakes. I observed that allochthonous carbon subsidizes bacteria even at high levels of phytoplankton biomass. READ MORE

  5. 10. Direct and indirect effects of fish predation and excretion in aquatic food webs

    Author : José Luiz Attayde; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; Hydrobiology; zooplankton; resilience; predation; phytoplankton; nutrient enrichment; nutrient recycling; interaction strength; herbivory; food webs; food chain; excretion; fish; detritus; detritivory; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms by which planktivorous fish can affect planktonic communities in lakes and how they may affect benthic communities through their effects on planktonic communities. In a laboratory experiment, nutrients released by fish increased algal biomass and altered phytoplankton community structure, suggesting that fish can affect phytoplankton by directly releasing nutrients.
