Simulation of multipass welding to reduce intergranular stress corrosion cracking

Abstract: This thesis describes the use of the finite element method for simulation of multipass welding. The simulations have been used to find welding procedures that minimises tensile residual stresses on the inside of the studied pipes. This will lead to a reduced risk for Inter Granular Stress Corrosion Cracking. Two pipes, each with two welding procedures, were studied. The thesis comprises an introductory part and two appended papers. The first presents the results for the studied cases. The numerical techniques developed for making it possible to study multipass welding when large deformations occur are described in the second paper.
