1. Experimental studies of particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions
Abstract : This thesis is about high energy heavy ion physics. Two major experiments, the WA98 at CERN and the PHENIX at Brookhaven National Laboratory, are described. Results from data analysis from both experiments are presented. The WA98 chapter presents particle identification methods and phi-meson measurements. READ MORE

2. Weak Atomic Interactions
Abstract : An atom or ion can change quantum state, usually through emission or absorption of a photon. The photon has the same energy as the energy difference between the states of the transition. The states, or energy levels, of an atom are quantized and light emitted, or absorbed, from the atom is therefore of specific wavelengths, giving spectral lines. READ MORE

3. A single trapped Rydberg ion
Abstract : Systems of trapped ions and systems of ultracold Rydberg atoms are used at the forefront of quantum physics research and they make strong contenders as platforms for quantum technologies. Trapped Rydberg ions are a new hybrid technology envisaged to have both the exquisite control of trapped ion systems and the strong interactions of Rydberg atoms. READ MORE

4. The Penning trap mass spectrometer SMILETRAP II and evaporative cooling of highly-charged ions
Abstract : Accurate mass values have wide-ranging applications in physics and metrology, allowing, for example, to test quantum electrodynamics and fundamental symmetries, to determine fundamental constants, and to establish weight standards. This thesis describes the new high-precision double-Penning trap mass spectrometer SMILETRAP II which aims at relative uncertainties in the mass determination of 10-10 and below. READ MORE

5. Experimental Studies in Chemical Physics
Abstract : Different laser based methods have been applied for studying different aspects on chemical physics. The transition metal containing molecules vanadium oxide (VO), zirconium sulphide (ZrS), zirconium dimer (Zr2) and titanium dimer (Ti2) have been studied in cool molecular beams using two-photon ionization technique.
