  1. 1. ADP regulation of insulin secretion and beta-cell apoptosis

    Author : Chanyuan Tan; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; P2Y; β-cell; ADP; insulin; apoptosis; autocrine; ectonucleotidase;

    Abstract : The aims of this dissertation were to investigate the effects of extracellular purines on insulin secretion, and apoptosis in mouse pancreatic islets and β-cells; to examine if high glucose and free fatty acids induces β-cell apoptosis via autocrine effects of ADP acting on the P2Y13 receptor; and to investigate the modulation of extracellular purines in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) through ectonucleotidase or ATP release under the effect of high glucose. The expression of the ADP receptors P2Y1 and P2Y13 were shown in both mouse pancreatic islets and isolated β-cells using real-time PCR quantification. READ MORE

  2. 2. Metabolic consequences of a Paleolithic diet in obese postmenopausal women

    Author : Caroline Blomquist; Tommy Olsson; Elin Chorell; Per-Arne Svensson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Postmenopausal women; Paleolithic diet; randomized diet intervention; fat metabolism; low-grade inflammation; circulating fatty acids; diet validation; obesity; insulin resistance; Postmenopausala kvinnor; Paleolitisk kost; randomiserad kostintervention; fettmetabolism; fetma; låggradig inflammation; cirkulerande fettsyror; kostvalidering; fetma; insulin resistens; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : BackgroundObesity, in particular abdominal adiposity, is associated with elevated fatty acids and pro-inflammatory adipokines, which are linked to ectopic fat storage and insulin resistance. During menopause, there is a redistribution of fat from the peripheral to abdominal depots. READ MORE

  3. 3. Dissecting the role of micro-RNAs in diabetes

    Author : Caroline Bolmeson; Create Health; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; Type 2 diabetes; micro-RNA; Dicer; beta-cell function; insulin secretion; glucose; NOD mouse; Goto-Kakizaki rat; human islets; thymocytes; apoptosis;

    Abstract : The role of miRNAs in pancreatic islets and β-cell function and in the development of diabetes in human and rodents have been investigated in this thesis. Dicer1 was specifically deleted in vivo in pancreatic β-cells under the RIP-promoter in mice. READ MORE

  4. 4. Common risk factors associated with acute myocardial infarction: Population-based studies with a focus on gender differences

    Author : Charlotte A Larsson; Samhällsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cortisol; insulin resistance; abdominal obesity; hypertension; type 2 diabetes; population-based; AMI; gender differences; physical activity; left ventricular hypertrophy;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore how the risk for AMI, and the associations between several of its risk factors, differs by gender. Information was collected from four Swedish cohorts: one patient cohort from Skara (1992-1993, n=1149) and three population-based cohorts, i.e. READ MORE

  5. 5. FOXC2 and CAPN10 as candidate genes for obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

    Author : Emma A Nilsson; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomedicinska vetenskaper; Biomedical sciences; Type 2 diabetes; Genetics; Obesity;

    Abstract : The worldwide prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes is increasing rapidly. Both disorders depend on genetic and environmental factors. The studies included in this thesis investigated the possible association of the FOXC2 and CAPN10 genes with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and related phenotypes. READ MORE
