  1. 1. Landfill Mining : Institutional challenges for the implementation of resource extraction from waste deposits

    Author : Nils Johansson; Joakim Krook; Mats Eklund; Myra Hird; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Landfill mining; recycling; mineral policy; institutions; transitions; mining.;

    Abstract : The overall aim of the thesis is to examine the institutional conditions for the implementation and emergence of landfill mining. The result shows that  current policy makes it difficult for landfill mining operators to find a market outlet for the exhumed material, which means that landfill mining may result in a waste disposal problem. 2. 2. Economics of Landfill Mining : Usefulness and Validity of Different Assessment Approaches

    Author : John Laurence Esguerra; Joakim Krook; Niclas Svensson; Steven Van Passel; Miguel Brandao; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Economic assessment; Uncertainty management; Landfill management; Landfill mining;

    Abstract : Landfill mining (LFM) is an alternative strategy to manage landfills that integrates remediation with secondary resource recovery. At present, LFM remains as an emerging concept with a few pilot-scale project implementations, which presents challenges when assessing its economic performance. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modern landfill leachates – quality and treatment

    Author : Hanna Modin; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Heavy metals; European Landfill Directive; Biodegradation; Landfill leachate; Leaching tests; Multivariate data analysis; Organic matter; Sorption filters;

    Abstract : Waste management in Europe has changed, mainly as a result of stricter regulations, most notably the European Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC. In Sweden, landfill tax and a ban on the landfilling of waste with total organic carbon content over 10 % have diverted large amounts of waste from landfills. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development and Evaluation of a Filter-Bed-Based System for Full-Scale Treatment of Industrial Landfill Leachate

    Author : Pille Kängsepp; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic and inorganic pollutants; Landfill; shredder residue; vertical-flow filter bed; pond; leachate treatment; carbon-containing ash; peat;

    Abstract : It is well known that nature offers an abundance of materials and processes that can be adapted in low-tech fashion, to fabricate systems capable of removing pollutants from wastewater. During the last decade, extensive basic and engineering research on such natural treatment systems have led to improvement of the quality of discharged wastewaters. READ MORE
