  1. 1. Functional dualism of antimicrobial host defence peptides

    Author : Åse Björstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : antimicrobial; apoptosis; cathelicidin; host defence peptide; interleukin 8; LL-37; permeabilisation;

    Abstract : Antimicrobial host defence peptides are central to innate immunity and many possess direct antimicrobial actions on bacteria as well as indirect immunomodulatory functions on human leukocytes. Different variants of the bifunctional Helicobacter pylori peptide, Hp(2-20), were synthesised and inhibition zone assays and chemiluminescence systems were employed for determination of direct antimicrobial action and superoxide release (immunomodulatory) from human neutrophils, respectively. 2. 2. Trichoderma viride alamethicin and plant cells - Action, response and resistance

    Author : Mari Aidemark; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; Nicotiana tabacum; cell cultures; alamethicin; cell permeabilisation; resistance; callose; BY-2;

    Abstract : Alamethicin is a membrane active peptide secreted from the soil-living fungus Trichoderma viride. When coexisting with T. Viride, plant roots are exposed to alamethicin, which has the ability to elicit formation of volatile compounds involved in pathogen defence. READ MORE

  3. 3. A novel method using DNA binding fluorochromes as indirect probes to study linker histone-chromatin interactions in situ

    Author : Helena Loborg; Pierre Åman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Over the years, a variety of methods have been used to study chromatin structure. These techniques have provided valuable information about nuclear framework, chromatin organisation, and the proteins that are involved in the formation and maintenance of chromatin. READ MORE

  4. 4. Alternative NAD(P)H dehydrogenases in plant mitochondria - localisation, catalytic functions and physiological roles

    Author : Agnieszka Michalecka; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Kärlväxters fysiologi; Physiology of vascular plants; NAD P H dehydrogenase; light-dependence; electron transport chain; alamethicin; alternative oxidase;

    Abstract : In addition to complex I, the plant mitochondrial electron transport chain possesses several alternative NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, not present in animals. These enzymes allow nonenergy-conserving electron transfer from cytoplasmic and matrix NAD(P)H to ubiquinone. READ MORE

  5. 5. The plant respiratory chain: Redox responses and catalytic definition of alternative pathways

    Author : Daniela Geisler; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; enzymology; Proteins; Kärlväxters fysiologi; Physiology of vascular plants; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; Växtbiokemi; Plant biochemistry; respiratory chain; plant mitochondria; nitrogen; NADPH dehydrogenase; NADH dehydrogenase; alternative oxidase; calcium; Proteiner; enzymologi; Bioenergetics; Bioenergetik; Lipids; steroids; membranes; Lipider; steroider; mebran;

    Abstract : The respiratory chain of plants contains both proton-pumping enzymes that conserve energy and non-proton-pumping alternative enzymes that bypass the sites of energy conservation. In addition to the proton-pumping complex I, plant mitochondria contain alternative type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, which allow oxidation of NADH and NADPH from the matrix and the cytosol. READ MORE
