  1. 1. Human response to wind turbine noise : perception, annoyance and moderating factors

    Author : Eja Pedersen; Sten Ljunggren; Högskolan i Halmstad; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Noise; Environmental exposure; Wind; Audio-visual interaction; Low-level noise exposure; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; wind turbines; noise annoyance; sound perception; audio-visual interaction; low-level noise exposure;

    Abstract : Aims: The aims of this thesis were to describe and gain an understanding of how people who live in the vicinity of wind turbines are affected by wind turbine noise, and how individual, situational and visual factors, as well as sound properties, moderate the response.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a flat, mainly rural area in Sweden, with the objective to estimate the prevalence of noise annoyance and to examine the dose-response relationship between A-weighted sound pressure levels (SPLs) and perception of and annoyance with wind turbine noise. 2. 2. Wind turbine simulations using spectral elements

    Author : Elektra Kleusberg; Dan Henningson; Philipp Schlatter; Stefan Ivanell; Johan Meyers; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wind turbine; wakes; wake interaction; computational fluid dynamics; actuator line method; spectral elements; free-stream turbulence; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Understanding the flow around wind turbines is a highly relevant research question due to the increased interest in harvesting energy from renewable sources. This thesis approaches the topic by means of numerical simulations using the actuator line method and the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in the spectral element code Nek5000. READ MORE

  3. 3. Wind-turbine wake flows - Effects of boundary layers and periodic disturbances

    Author : Ylva Odemark; Jens Fransson; Per-Åge Krogstad; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wind power; wind-turbine model; wind tunnel; porous disc; hot-wire anemometry; particle image velocimetry; blade element momentum method; large eddy simulations; actuator disc method;

    Abstract : The increased fatigue loads and decreased power output of a wind turbine placed in the wake of another turbine is a well-known problem when building new wind-power farms and a subject of intensive research. These problems are caused by the velocity gradients and high turbulence levels present in the wake of a turbine. READ MORE

  4. 4. Numerical computations of wind turbine wakes

    Author : Stefan S. A. Ivanell; Dan Henningson; Peinke Joachim; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Actuator Line Model; Actuator Disc Model; Wind Turbine Wake; CFD; LES; EllipSys3D; Fluid mechanics; Strömningsmekanik;

    Abstract : Numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations are performed to achieve a better understanding of the behaviour of wakes generated by wind turbines. The simulations are performed by combining the in-house developed computer code EllipSys3D with the actuator line and disc methodologies. READ MORE
