  1. 1. Evolving ecological communities in changing environments

    Author : Jacob Johansson; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; adaptive dynamics; competition; community evolution; ecological communities; environmental change; evolutionary branching;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of theoretical studies of the evolutionary consequences of environmental change in ecological communities. Paper I and II are concerned with the origin of diversity, i.e. how a single lineage can split into two, under the influence of selection induced by competitive interactions (evolutionary branching). 2. 2. Drivers of polymorphism dynamics in pygmy grasshoppers

    Author : Jenny Johansson; Anders Forsman; Jacob Höglund; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolutionary Biology; Evolutionsbiologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I used colour polymorphism in pygmy grasshoppers as a model system to study the influence of selection, developmental plasticity, mating behaviour and gene flow on patterns of phenotypic and genetic diversity within and among populations in changing environments.Data for more than 5,000 individuals collected from natural populations showed that the incidence of black (melanic) pygmy grasshoppers was higher in burnt than in non-burnt areas, and rapidly declined over time within populations in post-fire environments. 3. 3. Biopolitics and Reflexivity : A Study of GMO Policymaking in the European Union

    Author : Anders Johansson; Thomas Achen; Sven Widmalm; Stellan Welin; Jacob Dahl; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; GMO; genetically modified organism; precautionary principle; risk biopolitics; policy; European Union; EU; reflexivity; reflexive modernity; GMO; genetiskt modifierade organismer; försiktighetsprincipen; risk biopolitik; policy; Europeiska Unionen; EU; reflexivitet; reflexiv modernitet; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : The political discourse that has emerged as a consequence of establishing a European regulatory framework for GMOs has not been without problems. This dissertation addresses the political and regulatory challenges created by the development and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the EU. READ MORE

  4. 4. Novel Algorithms for Optimal Transport via Splitting Methods

    Author : Jacob Lindbäck; Mikael Johansson; Jérôme Malick; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; optimal transport; splitting methods; Optimeringslära och systemteori; Optimization and Systems Theory;

    Abstract : This thesis studies how the Douglas–Rachford splitting technique can be leveraged for scalable computational optimal transport (OT). By carefully splitting the problem, we derive an algorithm with several advantages. READ MORE

  5. 5. Evolution of Plants : a mathematical perspective

    Author : Magnus Lindh; Åke Brännström; Jacob Johansson; Mats G Larson; Lennart Persson; Claus Rüffler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; plants; mathematics; optimization; optimal control; adaptive dynamics; flowering; seasons; tree crown; drought; taproot; trade-off; strategy; trait; ESS; NPP; LAI; Red Queen; Mathematics; matematik;

    Abstract : The Earth harbors around 300 000 plant species. The rich and complex environment provided by plants is considered a key factor for the extraordinary diversity of the terrestrial fauna by, for example, providing food and shelter. READ MORE
