1. Studies of Retroviral Reverse Transcriptase and Flaviviral Protease Enzymes as Antiviral Drug Targets : Applications in Antiviral Drug Discovery & Therapy
Abstract : Viruses are a major threat to humans due to their unique adaptability, evolvability and capability to control their hosts as parasites and genetic elements. HIV/AIDS is the third largest cause of death by infectious diseases in the world, and drug resistance due to the viral mutations is still the leading cause of treatment failure. READ MORE

2. Viral dUTPases, Recombinant Expression, Purification and Characterization
Abstract : The enzyme deoxyuridine 5’-triphosphate nucleotidohydrolase (dUTPase, EC 3.6.1.23) catalyzes the hydrolysis of dUTP to dUMP and pyrophosphate. READ MORE

3. Biosensor Studies of Ligand Interactions with Structurally Flexible Enzymes : Applications for Antiviral Drug Development
Abstract : The use of a surface plasmon biosensor fills a missing link in kinetic studies of enzymes, since it measures directly the interaction between biomolecules and allows determination of parameters that are determined only indirectly in activity assays. The present thesis deals with kinetic and dynamic aspects of ligand binding to two viral enzymes: the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) protease and the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcriptase (HIV-1 RT). 4. Viral gastrointestinal infections in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients
Abstract : Gastrointestinal symptoms, and elevated liver enzymes, are common after HSCT, often due to drug toxicity, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) or infections. It is essential to distinguish between GVHD and infection, since both conditions may progress to lethal disease, but require opposite strategies for the immunosuppressive treatment. READ MORE

5. Retroviral and related nucleic acid processing enzymes expression and detection : Applications on clinical studies of HIV and HERVs
Abstract : Reverse transcriptase (RT), the expression and detection of the enzyme marking the family Retroviridae, has been studied. A new RT activity assay adapted to 96-well microtitre plates is described. It uses a non- radioactive bromodeoxyuridine triphosphate (BrdUTP) substrate in a solid phase format. The assay was highly sensitive. READ MORE
