  1. 1. Trypsinogen and Its Activation in Acute Pancreatitis

    Author : Ulf Petersson; Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TAP; ERCP; carboxypeptidase B activation peptide; trypsinogen activation peptide; trypsinogen activation; Acute pancreatitis; trypsinogen; CAPAP; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : Pancreatic enzymes, neutrophils, free radicals and cytokines are involved in the pathophysiology of AP. Clarification of their interaction and time-course will improve our understanding of AP and provide a better basis for treatment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aspects on sepsis : treatment and markers

    Author : Anna Gustafsson; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : antimicrobial peptides; cytokines; lipoteichoic acid; lipopolysaccharide; soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor; sepsis;

    Abstract : Sepsis is one of the greatest challenges in critical care medicine today, while the treatment of sepsis and evaluation of its severity is complicated. The first part of this thesis presents two approaches on the use of antimicrobial peptides in sepsis treatment, relying on both soluble and immobilized peptides. READ MORE

  3. 3. Platelet Activation and Inhibition in Connection with Vascular Stents

    Author : Kjeld Christensen; Rolf Larsson; Sten Husted; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; platelets; inhibition; activation; stents; ACS; Medicin;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the Chandler loop, which makes it possible to conduct studies in vitro of molecular and cellular interactions between whole blood and stents. It was possible to monitor activation and inhibition of the cascades systems, leukocytes and platelets by combining different platelet inhibitors and heparin coating of stents. READ MORE

  4. 4. Clincal Aspects of Biological Brain Damage Markers

    Abstract : Biomarkers for organ damage and/or dysfuntion are used in almost all areas of medicine. The brain has eluded this technological development for some time. Recently, the S100B protein has been shown to be a promising marker of brain damage. However, before S100S can reach clinical reality, several problems must be solved. READ MORE

  5. 5. Disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis : Studies in interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor alpha, monocyte activity, acute phase markers, glucocorticoids, and disability

    Author : Nils Gunnar Arvidson; Anders Larsson; Arvi Larsen; Øystein Førre; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; acute phase markers; circadian rhythm; disability; disease activity; glucocorticoids; monocyte activation; rheumatoid arthritis; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : In the present studies, aspects of some disease activity measures in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been investigated, including the effect of glucocorticoids on this activity. In RA, serum interleukin(IL)-6 levels were elevated and were shown to have a circadian rhythm, with peak levels in the morning, declining towards low or normal levels in the afternoon and evening.
