  1. 1. Mining Futures : Predictions and Uncertainty in Swedish Mineral Exploration

    Author : Tobias Olofsson; Patrik Aspers; Gholamreza Azarian; Trine Pallesen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Uncertainty; Risk management; Sociology of the Future; Valuation; Justification; Mineral Exploration; Second Nature; Natural Resources; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Abstract : Any forward-oriented enterprise must somehow manage the challenges posed by uncertainty and with its distant temporal horizons, high stakes, and low probability of success, mineral exploration is a good illustration of this general rule. Based on a combination of interviews, observations, and archival research, this thesis investigates how explorationists use predictions to manage the material complexities and the uncertainties that contribute to determining the future minability of mineral deposits. 2. 2. Computational exploration of human genome variation

    Author : David Fredman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : SNP; polymorphism; database; genotyping; duplication; haplotype;

    Abstract : In studies of human genome variation, researchers attempt to identify the DNA sequence differences between our genomes that contribute substantially to variation that can be observed on a physical level (phenotype). Genetic variation can also be used to study population dynamics in human history, and how evolutionary forces have shaped the human genome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Therapeutic alliance : exploration of the construct validity of the concept

    Author : Annika Lindgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : alliance;

    Abstract : Background: Repeated meta-analyses have established that there exists a robust association between therapeutic alliance and outcome at end of treatment; still, there is a lack of coherent theory regarding the concept and lack of agreement on how to interpret and understand research results. Further support of the construct validity of the concept is needed. READ MORE

  4. 4. From Art Galleries to Terrain Modelling --- A Meandering Path through Computational Geometry

    Author : Mikael Hammar; Data Vetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; system; numerisk analys; Datalogi; systems; control; numerical analysis; Approximation Algorithms; Computational Geometry; Online Algorithms; Art Gallery Problem; Linear Search; Traveling Salesman Problem; R-Tree; Delaunay Triangulation; Polygon Exploration; Computer science; Shortest Watchman Routes; kontroll; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : We give approximation and online algorithms as well as data structures for some well studied problems in computational geometry. The thesis is divided into three parts. In part one, we study problems related to guarding, exploring and searching geometric environments. READ MORE

  5. 5. Quantum Chemical Exploration of Nitriles in Prebiotic Chemistry and Astrobiology

    Author : Hilda Sandström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metadynamics; astrochemistry; iminoacetonitrile; hydrogen cyanide; acrylonitrile; azotosome; Titan;

    Abstract : The Universe hosts countless different chemical environments, such as planets, moons, comets and the interstellar medium. The diverse pressures, temperatures and chemical compositions of these environments make a wide variety of processes possible. READ MORE
