  1. 1. Attraction and Rejection : On the love–hate relationship between stars and black holes

    Author : Emanuel Gafton; Stephan Rosswog; Tamara Bogdanović; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Solitary stars wandering too close to the supermassive black hole at the centre of their galaxy may become tidally disrupted, if the tidal forces due to the black hole overcome the self-gravity holding the star together. Depending on the strength of the encounter, the star may be partially disrupted, resulting in a surviving stellar core and two tidal arms, or may be completely disrupted, resulting in a long and thin tidal stream expected to fall back and circularize into an accretion disc (the two cases are illustrated on the cover of this thesis). 2. 2. Bound by long-range interactions: Molecular crystals and benzene on Cu(111)

    Author : Kristian Berland; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DFT; diffusion barriers; sparse matter; platonic hydrocarbons; molecular crystals; van der Waals density functional vdW-DF ; van der Waals forces; London-dispersion forces; self-assembly; hexamine; molecular overlayers; electronic structure; Friedel oscillations; soft matter; surface-mediated interactions; physiosorption;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates molecular systems bound by long-range interactions. Westudy molecular crystals held together by van der Waals forces and the physisorption of benzene (Bz) on Cu(111). READ MORE

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the interactions between talc mineral and surfaces, liquids and chemicals relevant for industrial applications, such as pulp and paper. Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry as a filler pigment, in control of pitch (lipophilic extractives) deposits and as a coating pigment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interaction Between Microgels and Oppositely Charged Proteins

    Author : Christian Johansson; Per Hansson; Brian Saunders; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microgel; protein; uptake; distribution; core-shell; colloidal stability; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis reports on interactions between microgels and oppositely charged proteins. Two types of negatively charged microgels are investigated: poly(acrylic acid) microgels of 60-80 µm in diameter, and colloidal poly(NIPAM-co-acrylic acid) microgels of around 1 µm in diameter. 5. 5. Monte Carlo Simulations of the Equilibrium Properties of Semi-stiff Polymer Chains : Efficient Sampling from Compact to Extended Structures

    Author : Alexey Siretskiy; Christer Elvingson; Alexander Lyubartsev; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polymers; equilibrium properties; statistical mechanics; computer simulation; Monte Carlo; Wang-Landau; compact structures; parallel computations; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Chemistry with specialization in Physical Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Polymers is a class of molecules which can have many different structures due to a large number of degrees of freedom. Many biopolymers, e.g. DNA, but also synthetic macromolecules have special structural features due to their backbone stiffness. READ MORE
