  1. 1. Intraocular and intracranial transplantation of neural tissue : Studies on hypothalamic and hippocampal neuros

    Author : Hanna Bergman; Pertti Panula; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Previous studies has demonstrated the possibility to transplant monoaminergic neurons intracranially and to the anterior chamber of the eye, where these neurons continue to develop into functional, transmitter expressing cells. In the present study, investigations were undertaken to examine the development of transplanted hypothalamic and hippocampal neurons in the rat. READ MORE

  2. 2. On transplantation of fetal ventral mesencephalon with focus on dopaminergic nerve fiber formation

    Author : Nina Törnqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : VM; graft; Parkinson s disease; graft reinnervation; striatum; patchy; intraocular transplantation; intracranial transplantation; primary culture;

    Abstract : Poor cell survival and striatal reinnervation are two of the postulated limiting factors of fetal ventral mesencephalic (VM) grafting in Parkinson's disease. It has, however, been reported that an increased survival of VM dopaminergic neurons does not correlate with an enhanced target innervation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Skin cancer in relation to tobacco use and organ transplantation

    Author : Åsa Odenbro; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Skin cancer incidence in fair-skinned populations has increased more rapidly than any other cancer form during the past several decades. The possible impact of common exposures in the population, such as tobacco use and overweight/obesity, is not established. READ MORE

  4. 4. The anterior chamber of the eye as an islet transplantation site in type-2 diabetes

    Author : Sai Bo Bo Tun; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease, one of the leading causes of death and a consistent financial burden globally. It occurs when insulin is insufficient for glucose homeostasis. Pancreatic islet transplantation drew attention as an attractive therapeutic option for treating Type-1 diabetes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Visual outcome, ocular findings, and visual processing skills after allogeneic stem cell transplantation in children

    Author : Alba Lucia Törnquist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Stem cell transplantation (SCT) offers a chance of cure in children with leukaemia and other life-threatening haematological, immunological, and metabolic diseases that do not respond to conventional treatment. Pre and post SCT, these children receive irradiation, and/or chemotherapy and immunosuppressive agents which like the primary disease may adversely affect the eye, the central nervous system as well as the posterior visual pathways and potentially threaten vision.
