  1. 21. Birds and Borrelia

    Author : Björn Olsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Borrelia; Ixodes ticks; Birds; Epidemiology; Zoonotisk ekologi; Virology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : The Lyme disease causing spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is transmitted by ticks within the genus Ixodes. These ticks are liberal host seekers and parasitise mammals, birds and reptiles.Prior to this study, the distribution of I. ricinus ticks and Lyme disease was thought to be restricted to the southern half of Sweden. 2. 22. Ehrlichia in animals and humans

    Author : Anneli Bjöersdorff; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; seroprevalence; humans; animals; granulocytic; ehrlichiosis; Ehrlichia phagocytophila; tick-borne; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Ehrlichia phagocytophila is a tick-borne pathogen of domestic animals, which has recently been acknowledged also as a human pathogen. It is a strictly intracellular bacterium, infecting granulocytes of the host, sometimes resulting in clinical disease - granulocytic ehrlichiosis - with manifestations ranging from mild flu-like conditions to severe infections with multi-organ failure and death. 3. 23. Structure and Function of the Borrelia burgdorferi Porins, P13 and P66

    Author : Mari Bonde; Sven Bergström; Melissa Caimano; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Borrelia; P13; P66; porin; protein complex; dissemination; osmotic stress;

    Abstract : Borrelia burgdorferi is an elongated and helically shaped bacterium that is the causal agent of the tick-borne illness Lyme disease. The disease manifests with initial flu-like symptoms and, in many cases, the appearance of a skin rash called erythema migrans at the site of the tick bite. READ MORE

  4. 24. The zoonotic pathogen Borrelia afzelii in its natural hosts : Bacterial dissemination and immuno-transcriptomics

    Author : Xiuqin Zhong; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Borrelia afzelii; natural hosts; bacterial load; immune response; RNA-seq;

    Abstract : Most pathogens can infect a number of different host species, but host species often differ considerably in susceptibility to a given pathogen. In the case of zoonotic pathogens, natural hosts typically present little or no disease symptoms, while humans and other “spill-over” hosts often present severe symptoms. READ MORE

  5. 25. Tick-Borne Infections in Humans : Aspects of immunopathogenesis, diagnosis and co-infections with Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum

    Author : Marika Nordberg; Pia Forsberg; Christina Ekerfelt; Ingvar Eliasson; Christine Wennerås; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The tick-borne infectious agents, B. burgdorferi, A. phagocytophilum and the TBE-virus, can all cause clinical disease in humans and may all initially give rise to myalgia, arthralgia, headache and fever. READ MORE
