  1. 11. Human eosinophils and their activation by allergens via danger signal receptors

    Author : Elin Redvall; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : human eosinophils; danger signals; allergen; formyl peptide receptors; CCR3; chemotaxis; degranulation; free oxygen radicals; receptor desensitization;

    Abstract : Human eosinophilic granulocytes are polymorphonuclear cells with a powerful arsenal of cytotoxic substances in their granules, which are mainly found in the gastrointestinal mucosa, and the respiratory and genitourinary tracts. Their physiological role is incompletely understood, although it is likely they protect the mucosal surfaces, perhaps by recognizing danger signals present on microorganisms or released from damaged tissue. 2. 12. Mass Spectrometry of Biologically Active Small Molecules : Focusing on polyphenols, alkaloids and amino acids

    Author : Zdeněk Spáčil; Leopold L. Ilag; Frantisek Turecek; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LC-MS; LDI; Mass spectrometry; HPLC; UHPLC; polyphenols; phenolic acids; BMAA; Separation methods; Separationsmetoder; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : The foci of this dissertation are on advanced liquid chromatography (LC) separation and mass spectrometry (MS) techniques for the analysis of small bioactive molecules. In addition to discussing general aspects of such techniques the results from analyses of polyphenols (PPs), alkaloids and amino acids published in five appended studies are presented and discussed. 3. 13. Clinical and immunohistochemical studies of small bowel carcinoid tumours

    Author : Kalle Landerholm; Johannes Järhult; Nils Wierup; Sture Falkmer; Roland Andersson; Bo Wängberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Small bowel carcinoid tumours arising from enterochromaffin cells in the jejunum and ileum are neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) characterized by secretion of serotonin, tachykinins and other bioactive substances. These substances may lead to the typical carcinoid syndrome as well as pronounced fibrosis locally and in the heart. READ MORE

  4. 14. Characterisation of two novel oleaginous yeast strains for efficient and sustainable production of acetyl-CoA derived products

    Author : Friederike Mierke; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Yeasts are major players in industry for production of valuable compounds. The market for yeast bioproduction is constantly growing, and sustainable bioproduction from renewable feedstocks is becoming increasingly important. READ MORE

  5. 15. Discovery of Chemical Probes through Structure-based Virtual Screening of Vast Compound Databases

    Author : Andreas Luttens; Jens Carlsson; Vsevolod Katritch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bioactive molecules have traditionally been discovered through labor-intensive screening methods in which individual compounds are tested against specific protein targets or cells to identify those that produce the desired biological effect. However, these approaches have significant limitations. READ MORE
