  2. 2. Male and female selective mechanisms, reproductive success and gene flow

    Author : Samuel Kiboi; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; Cucumis sativus.; genetic marker; gene flow; reproduction; embryo abortion; resistance; maternal selection; sexual selection; pollen competition; selection;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have studied male and female selective mechanisms that can affect plant reproductive success and gene flow. I have focussed on sexually selected traits, mainly pollen competition and maternal sorting mechanisms, for example through non-random ovule abortion. READ MORE

  3. 3. Breeding System Evolution and Pollination Success in the Wind-Pollinated Herb Plantago maritima

    Author : Emil Nilsson; Jon Ågren; Pia Mutikainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Breeding system; mating system; gynodioecy; male sterility; reproductive output; self-compatibility; self-incompatibility; wind-pollination; founder event; genetic structure; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examined variation in sex expression and mating patterns in the sexually polymorphic, wind-pollinated herb Plantago maritima. With a combination of field studies, greenhouse experiments, and genetic analyses, I (a) examined factors influencing sex ratio variation in gynodioecious plants (in which hermaphrodites and females coexist), (b) discovered variation in breeding system, (c) investigated density-dependence of seed production, and (d) documented genetic variation within and among populations close to the northern range margin in Europe. 5. 5. Cryptic Female Choice and Male Mating Behaviour : Sexual Interactions in Beetles

    Author : Martin Edvardsson; Göran Arnqvist; Paul Ward; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Cryptic female choice; Copulatory courtship; Harmful male traits; Nuptial gifts; Sperm competition; Sexual selection; Tribolium castaneum; Callosobruchus maculatus; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The importance of cryptic female choice, i.e. female post-copulatory influence over male reproductive success, in driving the evolution of male traits remains controversial. The main aim of this thesis was to understand the post-copulatory consequences of sexual interactions and the importance of cryptic female choice in two species of beetle. READ MORE
