1. Heparin coating and cardiotomy suction in cardiopulmonary bypass
Abstract : The present thesis addresses various means of reducing inflammatory responses associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and retransfusion of pericardial suction blood (PSB) during cardiac surgery. Four (I-IV) prospective randomised controlled clinical trials comprising 475 patients were performed in the following areas: effects of heparin coating on measures of clinical outcome and memory function (I, II), inflammatory reactions in PSB and its systemic effects after retransfusion using cardiotomy suction or cell salvage (III) and effects of retransfusion of PSB on memory function and release patterns of protein S100B (IV). 2. Cardiopulmonary bypass: Clinical studies in cardiac surgery patients
Abstract : BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is necessary to facilitate most cardiac operations. Although the vast majority of patients tolerate CPB physiology in conjunction with cardiac surgery well, there is risks of adverse outcomes. Optimal CPB perfusion is not defined, and may vary according to operation and patient specific factors. READ MORE

3. Cerebral Perfusion during Cardiopulmonary Bypass
Abstract : Impaired superior vena cava (SVC) cannula outflow during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is a frequent issue, often manifested by only marginal changes in routine monitoring parameters. Nevertheless, significant impact on cerebral perfusion may result. READ MORE

4. Cardiopulmonary bypass and the kidney - studies on patients undergoing cardiac surgery
Abstract : Acute kidney injury is a common complication after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and has a major impact on morbidity, mortality and costs. The mechanism of CPB-related renal impairment is not fully understood. READ MORE

5. Atelectasis and gas exchange impairment after cardiopulmonary bypass : An experimental study
Abstract : Despite of the improvement in management and equipment for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), postoperative pulmonary complications remain a major problem after cardiac surgery. In the present thesis, using a pig model, atelectasis has been tested as a cause of the increase in intrapulmonary shunt commonly seen after CPB. READ MORE
