  1. 1. Studies on catecholamine function in human fat cells

    Author : Lena Hellström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adipose tissue; human; catecholamines; lipolysis; adrenoceptors; mRNAhormone-sensitive lipase; hypo-caloric diet; thyroid hormones.;

    Abstract : Human adipose tissue is a heterogeneous organ as regards metabolism. The effects of catecholamines, the main lipolytic hormones in man vary considerably in different regions. Fat cell lipolysis also changes in a number of physiological and pathophysiological states. READ MORE

  2. 2. In vitro studies on the mechanisms of inhibited thyroidal iodide uptake and destructive thyroiditis as adverse effects of amiodarone and interferon-gamma

    Author : Sofia Tedelind; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : thyroid; amiodarone; interferon-gamma; iodide transport; tight junction; mitochondria; endocytosis;

    Abstract : The clinical use of the potent anti-arrhythmic drug amiodarone is limited due to adverse effects e.g. in the thyroid comprising both hypo- and hyperthyroidism. Amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction can occur in subjects with normal thyroid glands but also in those with an underlying thyroid abnormality resulting in an aggravation of the condition. 3. 3. Studies on the cytokine network in multiple sclerosis

    Author : Pia Kivisäkk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered to be an inflammatory immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS), the aetiology of which remains enigmatic. Cytokines produced by infiltrating inflammatory cells and resident cells in the brain are proposed to play a major role in directing and regulating the immune response, as well as mediating tissue damage. 4. 4. Natural killer cells in cancer : studies on migration and cytotoxicity

    Author : Erik Wennerberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The role of natural killer (NK) cells in cancer development has been studied extensively over the last four decades and the increasing knowledge on NK cell regulation has improved both safety and efficacy of treatment. Despite these recent advances the clinical success has to date been modest in treatment of solid tumors, owing both to suboptimal directed migration of NK cells and the tumor cell’s resistance to NK cell-mediated lysis. 5. 5. On the fate of triclosan in humans

    Author : Mats Allmyr; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Triclosan is a chlorinated organic compound which, due to its antibacterial properties in vitro, has found widespread use in a variety of products such as textiles, plastics and healthcare products. Humans are directly and chronically exposed to triclosan via dermal and mucosal contact from soap and toothpaste, upon which triclosan is rapidly absorbed into the body. READ MORE
