1. Inferring Land Use from Remote Sensing Imagery : A context-based approach
Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigates the potential of classification methods based on spatial context to infer specific forms of land use from remote sensing data. The problem is that some types of land use are characterized by a complex configuration of land covers that traditional per-pixel based methods have problems classifying due to spectral heterogeneity. 2. The Spatial Context – through the lens of method development
Abstract : In the present moment of time, we find ourselves in a period where the advancement of genomic tools is progressing at a fast pace. Of particular interest for this thesis is the study of gene activity. READ MORE

3. Exploring Biological Systems using Spatial Transcriptomic Technologies
Abstract : The transcriptome and the cells’ spatial organization are important determinants for the functions of biological systems, such as a tumor, brain, or skin tissue. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has emerged as a powerful tool for profiling the transcriptome of individual cells. READ MORE

4. Functional understanding of space : Representing spatial knowledge using concepts grounded in an agent's purpose
Abstract : This thesis examines the role of function in representations of space by robots - that is, dealing directly and explicitly with those aspects of space and objects in space that serve some purpose for the robot. It is suggested that taking function into account helps increase the generality and robustness of solutions in an unpredictable and complex world, and the suggestion is affirmed by several instantiations of functionally conceived spatial models. 5. Patterns of co-presence : Spatial configuration and social segregation
Abstract : This thesis notes that there is a lack of systematic research investigating segregation patterns based on how public space is used and frequented by citizens. In order for understanding of urban segregation to reach beyond residential segregation, the extent to which public space facilitates co-presence between social groups is a key issue. READ MORE
