  1. 1. Disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis : Studies in interleukin-6, tumour necrosis factor alpha, monocyte activity, acute phase markers, glucocorticoids, and disability

    Author : Nils Gunnar Arvidson; Anders Larsson; Arvi Larsen; Øystein Førre; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; acute phase markers; circadian rhythm; disability; disease activity; glucocorticoids; monocyte activation; rheumatoid arthritis; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : In the present studies, aspects of some disease activity measures in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been investigated, including the effect of glucocorticoids on this activity. In RA, serum interleukin(IL)-6 levels were elevated and were shown to have a circadian rhythm, with peak levels in the morning, declining towards low or normal levels in the afternoon and evening. 2. 2. Nest-site attendance and foraging ecology of the Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) on the Faroe Islands. Is the Northern Fulmar a useful indicator of ecosystem productivity and pollution?

    Author : Johannis Danielsen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nest-site attendance; foraging ecology; indicator species; Fulmar; Fulmarus glacialis; nocturnal activity; ecosystem productivity; pollution; mesopelagic fish;

    Abstract : The Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) is one of the most abundant seabirds in the Northern Hemisphere and the most abundant seabird on the Faroe Islands. Except from a few sporadic observations up until the 1950´s no study has focused on this species on the Faroe Islands. READ MORE

  3. 3. Adaptations for nocturnal vision in insect apposition eyes

    Author : Birgit Greiner; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; temporal and spatial summation; optical and neural adaptations; theoretical modelling.; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; Zoologi; dim light; vision; landmark navigation; nocturnal bees and wasps; Zoology; Animal anatomy; animal morphology;

    Abstract : Due to our own preference for bright light, we tend to forget that many insects are active in very dim light. The reasons for nocturnal activity are most easily seen in tropical areas of the world, where animals face severe competition for food and nocturnal insects are able to forage in a climate of reduced competition and predation. 4. 4. Metabolic and Endocrine Responses to Nocturnal Eating

    Author : Ulf Holmbäck; Linda Morgan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Nutrition; postprandial; substrate utilization; circadian; hormones; mood; Näringslära; Nutrition; Näringslära; Nutrition; näringslära;

    Abstract : An increasing amount of people have their work hours displaced to the night and there are indications that shift work and other irregular working schedules are associated with an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome and other pathological conditions. It is therefore important to address the consequences of eating at irregular hours, especially nighttime. READ MORE

  5. 5. Seasonal variations in general activity, behaviour and cutaneous glandular structures in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.)

    Author : Torgny Mossing; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Androgen; Cervidae; dermal glands; locomotor activity olfactory communicatiorL pheromones; photoperiod; rein deer; rut; seasonal variations;

    Abstract : The locomotor activity of the reindeer is separated into a diurnal and a nocturnal phase which, in turn, consists of a  number of short-term activity bursts. The onset and termination  of diurnal and nocturnal activity are largely in synchrony  with sunrise and sunset. READ MORE
