  1. 1. Structure and properties of Vasa oak

    Author : Jonas Ljungdahl; Lars Berglund; Magnus Burman; Per Hoffmann; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; oak; archaeological wood; European oak; transverse anisotropy; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : The Vasa ship is not adequately supported. Measurements of the hull show that the ship deforms and rotate towards the port side. In addition, damages on the hull at support areas have been observed. The damages are due to high compressive loads. READ MORE

  3. 3. Metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita - dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history

    Author : Jonas Hedin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; extinction debt; habitat history; habitat quality; pheromone; telemetry; capture-mark-recapture; metapopulation; dispersal; oak; Osmoderma eremita; beetle; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis starts with a review of different biodiversity assessment methods in forests and the rest deals with the metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita, a threatened beetle living in hollow trees. I concentrate on the effect of dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history for the presence, population size and future survival of this species. READ MORE

  4. 4. Deterioration of recent oak by iron compound : a comparison with Vasa oak

    Author : Shahin Norbakhsh; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []

    Abstract : Wood degradation in the historical warship Vasa has been studied systematically regarding the chemical and physical properties. The presence of iron(II) seems to be one important factor for the degradation of the wood, causing reduction of its tensile strength. This is unfortunately a serious problem as iron(II) compounds are abundant in Vasa wood. READ MORE

  5. 5. Promoting natural regeneration of oak by manipulating disturbance

    Author : Linda Petersson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Oak regeneration is thought to be promoted by natural disturbance and past management practices that create semi-open conditions, such as periodic livestock grazing and lowintensity fire. The overall goal of this thesis was to examine whether disturbance factors can promote natural oak regeneration. READ MORE
