  1. 1. Small biotopes in agricultural landscapes: importance for vascular plants and effects of management

    University dissertation from Lund University, Faculty of Science

    Author : Therese Irminger Street; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Small biotopes; incidental habitat; vascular plants; woody vegetation; grassland species; resource provisioning; species richness; habitat specificity; non-crop habitat; landscape complexity; heterogeneity; local management; agri-environment scheme;

    Abstract : As a consequence of agricultural intensification, large areas of non-crop habitat have been lost and farmland biodiversity has declined. Previous studies have shown that the extent of non-crop habitat influences farmland biodiversity, but the relative importance of different habitat types is less well known and the contribution of small incidental habitats to landscape-scale species richness is not fully understood. 2. 2. Regional and local variation in plant species richness

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Cecilia Dupré; Uppsala universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; coastal meadows; deciduous forests; dry grasslands; grazing; habitat configuration; habitat quality; hump-shaped curve; life history traits; regional species pool; soil factors; Utvecklingsbiologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Organism biology Developmental biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Organismbiologi Utvecklingsbiologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examine the variation in plant species richness along gradients of productivity and disturbance in grasslands and forest habitats in southern Sweden, and I compare the documented patterns with theoretical predictions. Moreover, I evaluate the relative importance of habitat quality and habitat configuration for the occurrence of field layer species in deciduous forests. READ MORE

  3. 3. Microbial adaptations and controlling mechanisms of surface-associated microhabitat heterogeneity in aquatic systems

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Jan Torsten Jeske; Uppsala universitet.; [2015]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial habitat heterogeneity; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Abstract : Habitat heterogeneity is a driving factor for speciation and ecosystem functioning and is well studied in macro-ecology. Yet our understanding of microbial adaptations, and governing processes is incomplete. READ MORE
