  1. 1. Theoretical Studies of Two-Dimensional Magnetism and Chemical Bonding

    Author : Oleksiy Grechnyev; Olle Eriksson; Alexander Lichtenstein; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; spin Hamiltonians; quantized spin models; Heisenberg model; spin waves; self-consistent spin-wave theory; dipolar interaction; density functional theory; chemical bonding; overlap population; MAX phases; metal hydrides; Fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part we study thermodynamics of the two-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet with dipolar interaction. This interaction breaks the conditions of the Mermin-Wagner theorem, resulting in a finite transition temperature. READ MORE

  2. 2. Molecular Interaction in Aqueous Solutions : Effects of Temperature and Solutes on Surface Structure and Hydrogen Bonding in Water

    Author : Clara-Magdalena Saak; Carl Caleman; Olle Björneholm; Nicusor Timneanu; Edwin Kukk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Intermolecular forces in liquids can give rise to complex emergent structures, particularly in water, where hydrogen bonding causes the formation of extended networks, and surfaces, where intermolecular structures can be distinctly different from the bulk, leading to unique properties and behaviours. While such structures have been studied in detail, it is still relatively unknown how such structures respond and adapt to external changes to their environment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Models of chemical bonding : Representations Used in School Textbooks and by Teachers and their Relation to Students´Difficulties in Understanding

    Author : Anna Bergqvist; Michal Drechsler; Shu-Nu Chang Rundgren; Pernilla Nilsson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pedagogical content knowledge; chemical bonding; textbook analysis; students learning difficulties; models in science education; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on how school textbooks and teachers present models of chemical bonding in upper secondary schools in Sweden. In science, as well as in science education, models play a central role, but research has shown that they often are difficult for students to understand. READ MORE

    Abstract : The research on new materials is a primary driving force for progress in human society. One of the most significant research topic nowadays is the development of new functional materials for technological applications, like perovskite implemented in solar cells, and graphene as a representative for the new 2D materials family. 5. 5. Probing molecular adsorbates with core level spectroscopies : Electronic structure and bonding models

    Author : Alexander Föhlisch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Resonantly excited X-ray emission spectroscopy has been applied to study the valence electronic structure of molecular adsorbates in an atom specific and orbital symmetry selective manner. In combination with ab initio cluster calculations, electronic structure and bonding models have been derived. READ MORE
