  1. 1. Directed Evolution of Glutathione Transferases with Altered Substrate Selectivity Profiles : A Laboratory Evolution Study Shedding Light on the Multidimensional Nature of Epistasis

    Author : Wei Zhang; Bengt Mannervik; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glutathione transferase; azathioprine; directed evolution; semi-rational design; catalytic mechanism; saturation mutagenesis; reduced amino acid alphabets; molecular docking; protein evolution; multivariate data analysis; epistasis; fitness landscape; evolutionary trajectories; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Directed evolution is generally regarded as a useful approach in protein engineering. By subjecting members of a mutant library to the power of Darwinian evolution, desired protein properties are obtained. Numerous reports have appeared in the literature showing the success of tailoring proteins for various applications by this method. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services

    Author : Arvid Bolin; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : Central place foraging; Agriculture; Competition; Ecosystem service; Species coexistence; bumble bees; landscape ecology; Biodiversity; Agri-environment scheme; Central place foraging; jordbruk; konkurrens; landskaps ekologi; humlor; bin;

    Abstract : Modern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can efficiently be implemented. 3. 3. On the importance of farmland as stopover habitat for migrating birds

    Author : Juliana Dänhardt; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conservation; bird migration; agriculture; stopover ecology; Golden plover; Pluvialis apricaria; landscape heterogeneity; organic farming; food availability; earthworms;

    Abstract : Agricultural intensification has led to dramatic population declines among many farmland bird species. Negative effects of intensive farming in terms of decreased local habitat quality or structural simplification of farmland landscapes have reduced both reproductive outcome and winter survival of many species. 4. 4. Context dependency of plant – animal interactions

    Author : Malin A. E. König; Johan Ehrlén; Christer Wiklund; John Stinchcombe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Anthocharis cardamines; attack intensity; Cardamine pratensis; cytotype; herbivory; larval fitness; oviposition; phenology; plant-animal interactions; plant resistance; plant tolerance; polyploidy; spatial variation; trait variation; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : The strength and direction of interactions between organisms vary spatially across the landscape. Traditionally, the focus has been on how trait variation affects the interactions between species. However, differences in abiotic and biotic environmental factors may also alter the distribution, phenology and behavior of the interacting species. READ MORE

  5. 5. Bee foraging and pollination : Consequences of spatial and temporal variation in flower resources

    Author : Johanna Yourstone; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Apoidea; bumblebee; foraging behavior; landscape ecology; land-use change; oilseed rape; trees; flower constancy; honeybee competition; functional traits; seminatural habitats; chili;

    Abstract : Wild bees foraging in contemporary agricultural landscapes are, because of agricultural intensification, faced with the challenges of reduced flower-rich habitats, as well as a changed spatio-temporal distribution of flower resources. As a result of this and other stressors such as pesticide exposure, widespread declines of bees have been reported. READ MORE
