  1. 1. Magnetic map sense in animals: effects of geographic and magnetic displacements

    Author : Jannika Boström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oenanthe oenanthe; skylight polarization; geomagnetic map; geomagnetic field; endogenous migration programme; migratory fuelling; orientation; animal navigation;

    Abstract : Migration research is a large and diverse field and in my thesis I have focused on the impact of geomagnetic cues on animal orientation, navigation and migratory fuelling. Several animal species from widely different taxa possess the ability to sense and make use of geomagnetic information during migratory or homing events. READ MORE

  2. 2. Migratory routes and stopover behaviour in avian migration

    Author : Robert Stach; Cecilia Kullberg; Sven Jakobsson; Thord Fransson; Åke Lindström; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bird migration; migration routes; stopover; geolocator; radio telemetry; tracking; fuel deposition; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Migratory birds, some small and light weight as matchboxes, engage in seasonal inter-continental journeys in order to take advantage of the long summer days and abundance of food at northern latitudes to breed and raise their young, and then escape the harsh winters by migrating to lower latitudes. This thesis deals with two important aspects of migration, the routes taken during migration and the birds’ behaviour at stopovers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genomic analyses of migratory divides in the willow warbler

    Author : Max Lundberg; MEMEG; []

    Abstract : In many species of birds juveniles migrate independently of experienced adults and thus have to rely on innate information about migratory routes and wintering area. This information is encoded as a set of inherited migratory directions and a timing schedule that provides information on when and how far to migrate. READ MORE

  4. 4. Avian migration: the role of geomagnetic cues

    Author : Ian Henshaw; Cecilia Kullberg; Thomas Alerstam; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; geomagnetic cues; orientation; food intake; fuel deposition; corticosterone; endogenous time program; bird migration; Biology; Biologi; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : The regularity and scale of bird migrations has impressed mankind for generations. Birds rely on an inherited migratory program to guide them during the journey; however, recent evidence suggests that additional external cues are necessary. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fuel and fly: adaptations to endurance exercise in migrating birds

    Author : Anders Kvist; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; water balance; flight power; phenotypic flexibility; energy assimilation; basal metabolism; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : Birds on migration alternate between consuming fuel stores during flights and accumulating fuel stores during stopovers. This thesis highlights some of the ways in which migrating birds have adapted to the different demands of fuelling and flight. Most of the time on migration is spent at stopover sites accumulating fuel stores. READ MORE
