  1. 1. Lung mechanics in the aging lung and in acute lung injury. Studies based on sinusoidal flow modulation

    University dissertation from Department of Clinical Physiology, Lund University

    Author : Ulrika Bitzén; [2006]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diagnostics; Diagnostik; acute lung injury; lung mechanics; acute respiratory distress syndrome; intensivvård; Anestesiologi; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; Andningsorganen; Respiratory system; Fysiologi; Physiology; flow regulation; method; lung resistance; compliance; aging;

    Abstract : Knowledge about lung mechanics is of interest in intensive care to adjust mechanical ventilation and in the lung laboratory for diagnostics and evaluation of patients with various kinds of respiratory diseases. In mechanical ventilation a single inspiratory elastic pressure-volume (Pel/V) curve is difficult to interpret due to continuing re-expansion of collapsed lung units over a large pressure interval. 2. 2. Laser diode systems for photodynamic therapy and medical diagnostics

    University dissertation from Department of Physics, Lund University

    Author : Eva Samsöe Andersen; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quasi-phasematching; photodynamic therapy; laser-induced fluorescence; medical laser systems.; Histology; cytochemistry; histochemistry; tissue culture; Histologi; Laserteknik; Laser technology; cytokemi; histokemi; vävnadskultur; Diagnostik; Diagnostics; second harmonic generation; pulsed lasers; spatial filtering; Diode lasers; optical feedback; Fysicumarkivet A:2004:Samsöe Andersen;

    Abstract : This work concerns techniques for improvement of the coherence properties of diode lasers so that they may be used in two specific medical applications: (Interstitial) photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser-induced fluorescence diagnostics. In the first application, spatial coherence is crucial, since the treatment light should be delivered through relatively thin optical fibers to optimize treatment and to facilitate minimally invasive treatment. 3. 3. Phosphatidylethanol - formation and degradation in blood and organs

    University dissertation from Steina Aradóttir, Medical neurochemistry, Lund University Hospital, S-221 85 Lund, Sweden

    Author : Steina Aradottir; [2004]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diagnostik; Public health; Diagnostics; organs; blood; HPLC; in vitro; in vivo; human; rat; phosphatidylethanol; phospholipase D; alcohol; ethanol; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi;

    Abstract : Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid formed exclusively by the action of phospholipase D (PLD) in the presence of ethanol. The degradation of PEth is slow and due to its accumulation in some cells the possibility to use PEth as marker of ethanol intake has been proposed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ultrasonic Methods for 2D Arterial Wall Movement Measurements

    University dissertation from Magnus Cinthio, Department of Electrical Measurements, LTH, Box 118, 221 00 Lund, Sweden

    Author : Magnus Cinthio; [2004]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tissue Doppler imaging; Cardiovascular system; Diagnostik; Diagnostics; Kardiovaskulära systemet; arteries; ultrasound; shear stress; axial movement; radial movement; Arterial distension; Arterial lumen diameter; PWV; Arterial longitudinal movement; pulse-wave velocity;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases constitute the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western World. To increase our knowledge of cardiovascular diseases, it is important to find methods, preferably non-invasive ones, to study very early manifestations of vascular disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Intra-Aneurysm Sac Pressure and Clinical Results after Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

    University dissertation from Nuno Dias, Endovascular Center, Entrance 59, Malmö University Hospital, S-20502 Malmö

    Author : Nuno Dias; [2004]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Diagnostics; Diagnostik; Open Repair; EVAR; Endovascular Aneurysm Repair; Pressure; Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm;

    Abstract : AIM: The aim was to evaluate the results of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in terms of intra-AAA pressure and clinical outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: 0.014-inch guide-wire-mounted tip-pressure sensors were used for direct intra-aneurysm sac pressure measurement (DISP) through translumbar puncture of the AAA. READ MORE
