  1. 1. Effects of Oral Contraceptives on Endogenous Hormones, Body Constitution, and Breast Epithelium in Healthy, Young Women

    Author : Helena Jernström; Bröstcancer-genetik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cytology; ovarian; breast cancer; proliferation; breast size; progesterone; estradiol; testosterone; luteinizing hormone; follicle stimulating hormone; sexual hormone binding globulin; insulin-like growth-factor-1; prolactin; Oral contraceptives; nulliparous women; oncology; cancerology; Cytologi; onkologi; cancer; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the effects of low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) on endogenous hormones, insulin-like growth-factor-1 (IGF-1), sexual hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and body constitution in two groups of healthy women aged 1925 who had never been pregnant. Prolactin concentrations were elevated in a subgroup of present and former users. READ MORE

  2. 2. Breast Cancer Prevention – lifestyle modifications or targeted interventions?

    Author : Öykü Boraka; LUCC: Lunds universitets cancercentrum; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; breast cancer; breast cancer prevention; physical activity; mammography; breast density;

    Abstract : Breast cancer is now the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the world. Breast cancer prevention has gained increasing attention due to increasing breast cancer incidence rates in the West and can be actualized through lifestyle modifications or targeted interventions. READ MORE

  3. 3. Influence of hypoxia on differentiation and proliferation of non-malignant and tumor cells

    Author : Marica Vaapil; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hypoxia; breast cancer; EPOR; small cell lung carcinoma; differentiation; proliferation; metabolism;

    Abstract : Solid tumors are less oxygenated than their tissue of origin. Low intra-tumor oxygen levels are associated with worse outcome, increased metastatic potential and immature phenotype in breast cancer. We have reported that tumor hypoxia correlates to low differentiation status in breast cancer. READ MORE

  4. 4. Proteomics of invasiveness of human breast epithelial cells

    Author : Kah Wai Lin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Mechanisms of malignant transformation and cancer invasion and factors controlling them in response to various stimuli remain elusive. We used proteomics and systems biology to explore these mechanisms in human breast epithelial cells. The objective has been to identify a set of biomarkers for diagnostics and prognostics of breast cancer. READ MORE

  5. 5. Anti-Tumor Effects of CysLT2R in Epithelial Cancer

    Author : Cecilia Magnusson; Malmö Cellpatologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; migration; Colon cancer; breast cancer; EGF; interferon;

    Abstract : The pro-inflammatory cysteinyl leukotrienes (cysLTs) are implicated in several pathological disorders, such as asthma and inflammatory diseases. The well-established connection between chronic inflammation and cancer implicates inflammatory mediators in cancer progression. It is therefore of interest to examine the effects of the CysLTs in cancer. READ MORE
